ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 URBAN SCHOOL OF SAN FRANCISCOUrban School of San Francisco seeks to ignite a passion for learning, inspiring its students to become self-motivated, enthusiastic participants in their education — both in high school and beyond. MISSION STATEMENT ON THE COVER: Cassie Eng (‘21) participates in UAS Physics: Electricity & Magnetism, an advanced honors class elective. During the Build-A-Speaker lab, students experiment with different materials to design a homemade paper cup speaker. They then create their own more advanced speaker, with the goal to hear music coming from their computer. Along the way they learn the physics of sound and how speakers work. ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 | 3 If you didn’t know any better, you might think this year’s annual fundraising report summarized a year like many before, with encouraging news and enthusiastic support from a wide range of stakeholders. Based on the numbers, you might even think it was most remarkable for how thoroughly the school exceeded its goals. Almost 90% of our families gave to the Annual Fund, raising over $1.6M, including more than $380,000 at our annual fundraiser for financial aid. But the 2019-20 school year, of course, was far from typical, and it presented profound challenges for all of us. The idea that a school can somehow be removed from the “real world” never felt more irrelevant. In this context, the exceptional generosity of our philanthropic community is as remarkable as the endorsement of Urban it represents. Please know that none of us with the privilege of working at Urban takes this trust and this support for granted. As we navigate the school through the changing logistical and emotional landscape, we will be sustained by this continued support of our constituencies, and by our shared belief in this extraordinary institution. While our faculty, staff and students were tested like never before, our community rose as it always does, supporting the school and allowing Urban to finish the year in a way that ensured the best for our students. Our thanks go out to the extraordinary volunteers who give so much of their time and talent to the school. In particular, we recognize our outgoing trustees Lucia Choi- Dalton, Ed Colloton, Drusie Davis and Bob Rosner. In addition to all of our dedicated Trustees, we would like to thank Parent/ Guardian Association Co-President Kari Levine and Alumni Council President Andrew Nguyen (‘99) who served as representatives on our Board. Special thanks are also extended to Annual Fundraiser for Financial Aid Co-Chairs Kate Hanson and April Asai, and Annual Fund Co-Chairs David Sunding and Elena Yang, whose leadership helped raise nearly $2 million from these two initiatives combined. niquette eve MESSAGE FROM CHAIR, URBAN BOARD OF TRUSTEES Not only did the Urban community show its generosity to the school through sharing talents and donations, but also through engaging with the school as we navigated Virtual Urban. Parents, grandparents, alumni, former trustees, alumni parents and friends of the school participated in events and were more involved with the school than ever. It was incredible to see so many Urban alumni visiting virtual classrooms or hosting informational panels for our current students, as well as seeing parents attend PGA events they otherwise would not have been able to attend. In a moment that felt so isolating, it was truly special to see the warmth made through virtual connections within our community. On behalf of Urban’s Board of Trustees, I thank you for your support of Urban and your engagement. We look forward to partnering with you in the years ahead and seeing you in person when we can safely do so again. 6 | ANNUAL REPORT 2019-20 Serving as the co-president of the Urban Parent/Guardian Association (PGA) was an honor and allowed me to observe the remarkable community from many different vantage points. My love of Urban began in 1979 when, as a 10th grader at Tam High, I sat in the Gumption Theater to watch my uncle, an Urban Senior, in the lead of You Can’t Take It With You, the Gumption’s first ever Winter Production. Never did I imagine that 40 years later I would be the proud parent of two Urban grads! As parents and guardians we are connected to one another through our commitment to the school and our dedication to Urban’s core values. Each of us partner with the school’s dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff who instill in each of our children a desire to show up ready to engage fully with an open heart and mind. I am grateful to be a part of this community and feel fortunate that my children received an Urban education. levine kari MESSAGE FROM 2018-20 CO-PRESIDENT, PARENT/GUARDIAN ASSOCIATION Thank you to all of the parents who give their talents, time and financial resources to this diverse and inclusive community. Thank you to all the PGA committee members who are always looking for new ways for us to connect and reflect Urban’s vision to the community. Thank you to the donors who make it possible to expand our community and offer an Urban education to a diverse group of students. And a special thank you to the PGA Executive Committee members for their tireless work over the year: Co-President Mary Walsh-Gorski, Secretary Leora Vestel and Treasurer Gabrey Means. You have inspired us all with your creativity, enthusiasm and love for Urban. As our world changes with challenges no one could have anticipated, we realize the significant role our communities play in our daily lives.
